They used to be good partners. The two shining stars of Lauren&Dickerson Law Firm. And lovers for almost three years. But now, they become enemies, fighting against each other in court.
Outside the city court.
A trial just ended. A group of people walked out of the solemn courtroom.
Jessie was wearing a black woman suit, a square briefcase in her hand, looking quite professional.
She was talking to a middle-aged woman who seemed very agitated. Judging from that woman's clothing, she didn't have a high social position.
"Ms. Jessie, thank you so much. If it wasn't for you, the Sky Corporation will never pay us."
"I only did my job, Mrs. Bianca. The written judgement will be issued in ten days. If you have any problem, just contact me."
Bianca's husband worked for a project owned by the Sky Corporation. During work, he fell accident from high place and was paralyzed. According to the victim, the company gave them inferior safety ropes for budget cuts. The company told a different story, saying that the victim purposely broken the safety rope to defraud the insurance.
The lawyers of both sides gave a heated debate in court. The court ruled in favour of the victim.
After winning a case, Jessie was clearly in a good mood. The moment she got back to the law firm, she went to Gabriel's office.
"Good news! I just won..."
Before Jessie could tell him the good news, what she saw stunned her.
Everything on Gabriel's table was gone, except a box.
"What's happening?"
"I'm leaving. I just quit."
"Is this some kind of a joke?"
Jessie had no idea what's happening before her.
"Why all of a sudden you want to leave? You told me your grandfather built this company. But he had to give it up to others for some reason. You have always wanted to get it back. You just made partner. Pretty soon you'll realize your dream. Why leaving now?"
Gabriel didn't say a single word. He expressionlessly sealed the box.
Only now did Jessie notice that the pot of cactus and the custom-made calendar weren't in that sealed box but in the trash.
She bought that cactus for him. As for the calendar, it was printed with a love letter she wrote to him anonymously.
Her gaze unknowingly shifted to his left wrist.
It was also empty. The couple red rope she personally put on his wrist wasn't there.
A feeling of emptiness grabbed her. To her, throwing those things away were like ripping out her heart.
Jessie looked at Gabriel with red eyes.
"Talk to me!
What's going on?
I am your girlfriend.
No matter what it is, we can deal with it together."
"Not anymore."
Gabriel took a key out of his pocket.
"Let's break up."
"I already took my stuff out of the apartment."
The key on the table stung Jessie.
Three years ago they moved in together. They bought the apartment together, fantasizing it would be their home from now on. But now, he said he had moved.
Gabriel didn't seem to notice Jessie's presence. He carried the box and was going to leave.
"Stop!"
Jessie's voice carried a trace of tremor.
"Don't I at least deserve an explanation?"
Three years of being together, he didn't want to say a word to her now.
Gabriel stopped in his steps. His gaze fell on his nameplate at the office door.
"I got tired." He didn't even look her in the eyes to tell her the answer.
Gabriel left Jessie alone on the spot without turning his head.
"No! No! No!
This can't be true!"
Jessie couldn't believe in all this. She hurriedly chased after him.
But what she saw at the next moment turned her world upside down.
An eye-dazzling red sports car was parked at the door.
The car door opened, and out came a beautiful woman in stylish clothes. When she saw Gabriel coming, she went forward and gave Gabriel a kiss on his cheek. Jessie expected Gabriel to dodge her kiss, but instead, he looked at that woman with affection.
Jessie frozen in her stance for she knew that woman, Amanda Jenkins, daughter of Sky Corporation's boss, Andrew Jenkins.
They met in court a few months ago. At the time, Sky Corporation was accused of illegal fund-raising, but it won that case.
Amanda also noticed Jessie. She asked Gabriel to get into the car first. Then she walked towards Jessie.
"Counselor, we met before."
Her smile made Jessie sick for somehow.
"Sorry, Ms Amanda. I have unfinished business with Gabriel."
Jessie didn't want to play nice with her. She pushed Amanda aside and ran towards the car.
Her attempt failed as Jessie felt a tight grip at her arm.
"Gabriel is my man now. You should stop pestering him for your own sake."
